AI Workshop And Lessons To Take Away

AI

Recently I hosted an AI workshop for the charity Place2Be, it was a great highly curious group who attended.

My AI Moment podcast co-host Jonathan also joined me and I wanted to share a few lessions and learnings and themes that struck me when completing my AAR (after action review) and hosting a number of different AI training.

  1. Build to the company problems, not to AI tools - you have to list out your problems you are trying to address before selecting any AI tools. Without a list of problems and goals AI tools will just be another set of tools.

  2. Balance the AI fear vs AI FOMO - many have the AI fear in taking their job, tasks will be helped, BUT your "magic" and your "art" won’t be replaced. Employees must know this upfront and in the workshop/hackathon.

  3. You can’t jump to the finish line - Start Small → Map Out Problems To Solve → Use AI To Help You Build Out Solutions → Connect To Goals & Measure Productivity → See & Feel The Value - this is a long-term exercise, not short-term, overhype is a problem right now. AI is 1x partner in your relay race.

  4. AI isn’t a silver bullet, its a smart tool you can ask to help you - if you cannot write a brief for the task you are looking to complete, you won’t prompt or code anything to help solve your problems or scale (if you struggle here, work with AI to meta prompt (asking AI for help) and ask enough questions to pull a brief out of you)
Quick-fire tips here - Use your camera and screenshots to upload content to get ahead quickly. Use voice to have a conversation and speed up the process of prompting and iteration.

  5. Never work in silo’s - the best way to see value in AI is cross-functionally, not in small teams or just at the department level. This kickstarts your journey, but won’t help colleagues adapt to the same level of working / trusting as an assistant or copilot.

  6. Social Wins - My favourite tip is to start a new TikTok or Instagram account and search for, follow and engage with Copilot, Gemini or ChatGPT accounts, these are way more practical and useful than hours of reading newsletters and news article and feeling like you need to watch. long-form YouTube video

AI workshops are often connected to the tools the team will use, often meaning versions of Copilot, Copilot isn’t as bad as most people think, they weren’t coached or trained to get the most out of it and in typical Microsoft form, they insert Copilot in many area’s across their suite they don’t suggest to use m365 hub to use multiple docs, excels and PowerPoints to get the best results.

Below is our dedicated podcast on why Copilot isn’t anywhere near as bad as people think
